Ice fishing conditions remain strong in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, with most lakes sporting 25–28 inches of solid ice. Some areas have snow cover, which can make travel a bit challenging in spots, but overall, ice conditions are manageable and safe for most travel.
Important Season Closures: Gamefish Season Ends Soon
The inland gamefish season (including walleye, northern pike, and other game species) is winding down and closes at midnight on March 1, 2026 (first Sunday in March). After the gamefish season ends, anglers may continue fishing for panfish (such as crappies, bluegills, and perch). However, targeting walleyes, northern pike, muskellunge, or any other gamefish species is prohibited until the next open seasons begin.
Muskellunge (Musky) Season Update
This year, the northern musky season opens on the first Saturday in May (May 2, 2026, based on statewide inland regulations), a change from the traditional last Saturday in May opener in previous years for northern zones.
Road Work Alert: Highway 51 Near the Musky Shop
Road crews are scheduled to perform maintenance on Highway 51, a few miles south of the Musky Shop. Expect possible delays and plan for a short detour to reach us safely. We appreciate your patience as we all navigate these temporary disruptions.
Current Fishing Report: Walleye
Walleye fishing has been excellent lately. Anglers are catching good numbers in weeds and along weed lines, primarily in the 5–8 foot range, with some deeper weedline fish holding in 8–12 feet.
Top live bait choices:
- Large Golden Shiners
- Medium Golden Shiners
- Walleye Suckers
These baits have been producing consistent results.
Panfish Action: Crappies and More
Panfish (especially crappies) are biting well in similar weed areas, mostly 5–8 feet deep. Effective baits include:
- Crappie Minnows
- Rosy Red Minnows
- XL Fathead Minnows
- Jumbo Waxworms
- Waxworms
- Red and White Spikes
These options are delivering solid numbers of quality panfish.
Northern Pike Update
Northern pike are holding in pretty much the same areas as other species—weeds in the 5–8 foot range and slightly deeper weed lines. Pike suckers and large golden shiners continue to be top performers for pike.
