Fishing Conditions and Water Temperatures
We hope everyone is having a great fishing season so far! Fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been good, with fluctuating air temperatures causing water temperatures to vary. Currently, water temperatures are in the low to mid-60s.
Finding Fish in the Northwoods
Most species of fish are somewhat scattered, but areas with good green weeds are holding fish well. The initial weed edge, located in the 8-12 foot range, has proven to be particularly productive.
Musky Fishing: Best Baits and Strategies
Muskies have been hitting a variety of baits, including surface baits. However, small to medium-sized glide baits have been the most effective so far. Anglers have experienced great success with:
Optimizing Your Musky Fishing Approach
Since a variety of baits are working well, a successful strategy is to start shallow, covering an area for an hour or two. If there is no action, slide out slightly and target the weed edge.
Glide baits serve as excellent search tools for both locating and catching muskies. If muskies are spotted but do not strike the glide bait, be prepared with a throwback bait. Options such as bucktails—including Spanky Baits Raven or Toothy Tuff Assault Eel 5.5”—have proven effective due to their curly tail's triggering action.
The Suspended Musky Bite: When to Expect Success
The suspended musky bite has not yet developed, but as mid-to-late June approaches, a significant number of muskies typically move into the basins and suspend. Many anglers have success chasing suspended muskies throughout the summer. While the bite has not fully set up yet, it’s expected soon.
Walleye, Crappie, and Bass Fishing Report
Walleyes, crappies, and bass have all been located in the same areas as muskies. Reports indicate that all species are being caught in good green weeds near weed edges.
