Summer Fishing Update

We hope you're all enjoying a fantastic summer and finding time to go fishing in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Fishing in the Minocqua area has been productive despite several weather changes and cooler temperatures, which have scattered most fish species.

Fish Locations and Depths

Muskies, Crappies, Panfish, Bass, and Walleyes are present in shallow weeds and cover, but the highest concentrations are found in deeper waters, typically in the 8-12 foot range. Weed edges and weedy areas are particularly productive for catching various species.

Effective Baits and Techniques

The minnow bite remains effective for most species; however, crawlers and leeches are performing slightly better. Live bait, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and bucktails are all yielding good results. Additionally, Ned Rigs and Wacky Worms have been highly successful.

Musky Fishing Insights

While some Muskies are found in shallow waters, most are located near weed edges or suspended over deeper water. The suspended Musky bite, which typically strengthens in mid to late June depending on water temperatures, has been very strong this season. When targeting suspended Muskies, note that deep-running baits or counting down soft plastics aren't always necessary, as Muskies often hover higher in the water column over deep water. A key strategy is to locate soft-bottom areas over deep water, where bug hatches attract forage fish and, consequently, Muskies due to abundant food sources.

Top-performing baits recently include soft plastics such as Red October Tubes, Bull Dawgs, Alpha Dawgs, Medussas, and Krakens.
