We hope everyone is off to a great start to the 2026 fishing season! Here in the Minocqua, Wisconsin area, fishing has been quite good despite the cool water temperatures.

Current Water Temperatures

Most lakes in the Minocqua area are currently in the mid-50s to low-60s (Fahrenheit). Because of these cooler temps, fish are still somewhat scattered but are beginning to stage in shallower water.

Early Season Fishing Strategy

A smart approach right now is to start shallow and systematically work your way deeper until you locate fish.

  • Muskies and bass are currently holding shallow and will remain there until after the spawn.
  • After spawning, they will likely move to weed edges and structural breaks.
  • Crappies and panfish have not fully moved into the shallows yet but should arrive soon as water temperatures continue to rise.
  • Walleyes are scattered, so covering water is key.

Best early season tactic: Start along the shoreline and work out to 5–8 feet of water. Let the fish tell you where they want to be.

Best Baits for Early Season Fishing

Small to medium-sized baits fished at slow to moderate speeds are producing best right now. Here are some excellent bait recommendations that are working well in the Minocqua area:

We also carry a great selection of fresh live bait, including premium Musky Suckers.
