The start of the fishing season is right around the corner, and man, are we all ready for it. This year is the first time in many years that the Walleye opener and Musky opener will be on the same day, which is May 2.
Spring Ice Out and Water Temperatures in Northern Wisconsin
Here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we had a pretty normal ice out. With the start of the fishing season a couple of weeks past ice out, the water temps will still be fairly cold.
Like always, start by finding the warmest water on the lake. Typically, the smaller, dark-water lakes warm a bit faster; thus, the bite tends to be a bit better. Try to locate the warmest water, which most of the time is on the north end or north side of lakes.
Early Season Musky Tactics and Lure Recommendations
For Muskies, start with small bucktails such as the Smity Wizard or the Bucher Mini Buck. Small to medium-sized bucktails, crankbaits, soft plastics, and glide baits are all good options.
Try to find any new weed growth, downed trees, or rocks that will hold warmth if the sun is out warming the water. Typically, in the early season, Muskies will be fairly shallow, but be prepared to search a bit. Work slow presentations but cover some water so that hopefully you can put a pattern together.
Top Walleye Fishing Spots: Rainbow and Willow Flowage
As for Walleyes, the Rainbow Flowage and the Willow Flowage are the two most popular places to fish opening weekend; however, there are so many lakes to choose from here in Northern Wisconsin that there are a ton of great fishing options.
Again, try to find some new weed growth and gravel or sand bottom areas. Those areas typically hold Walleyes, usually from the shoreline out to 10-12 feet.
Best Live Bait and Crankbaits for Walleye
XL Fatheads, Walleye Suckers, and Blacktail chubs are all great choices for live bait, as well as Nightcrawlers and Leeches, though sometimes they ball up a bit depending on the water temps.
Crankbaits such as Rapala Husky Jerks and Floating Rapalas are excellent choices for Walleyes.
