Spring Weather Transition in the Northwoods of Wisconsin

Winter is gradually leaving the Northwoods of Wisconsin, bringing some very nice spring-like weather. However, we have seen major snowstorms in April before, so conditions can change quickly. Stay tuned for updates as we monitor the transition to open water.

Current Ice Conditions on Northwoods Lakes

On larger, deep, clear-water lakes, ice thickness currently ranges from 12–18 inches, though it is deteriorating daily. Smaller lakes have slightly less ice, with softening edges and open water beginning to develop along some shorelines.

⚠️ Safety First: Please use extreme caution when venturing out on the ice. Ice conditions are changing rapidly. Always check thickness in multiple locations and be prepared for soft edges and deteriorating ice.

2026 Wisconsin Fishing Season Dates

The inland gamefish season (including walleye, northern pike, bass, and others) is currently closed and will open on the first Saturday in May — May 2, 2026.

Important Update for Musky Anglers: The musky (muskellunge) season now opens statewide on the same day — May 2, 2026 (open water only). This is a change from previous years, when the northern musky season typically opened later in May.

Live Bait and Tackle Availability at The Musky Shop

We have a full selection of live bait for walleye fishing, including large Musky Suckers, perfect for musky fishing once the season opens. Stop by or contact us for the freshest bait and current recommendations.

Crappie and Panfish Ice Fishing Report

Crappies and panfish continue to be caught in good numbers. Effective techniques include:

  • Jigging ice spoons tipped with jumbo waxworms or regular waxworms in 5–7 foot weed areas
  • Using tip-downs as a productive method
  • Jigging with live bait such as crappie minnows, rosy reds, and XL fatheads

Fish are holding in shallow weeds, but don’t overlook the deep basins on larger lakes. Reports show some really big crappies being caught at 25 feet.
